Sandy Habitats Play an Important Role in Shrub Encroachment in Grasslands

چکیده

Shrub species have increased in density and cover desertification areas, however, the role of sandy habitats contributing to expansion shrubs is poorly understood. Although effect on plant growth reproduction been demonstrated, most existing studies lack either experimental demonstration or an integrated study during whole shrub life cycle. We performed field laboratory experiments examine responses four stages cycle (seed germination, growth, seed reproduction, clonal reproduction) (including sand substrate, burial wind erosion) for Caragana shrubs. Results showed that both substrate facilitated seedling biomass, sapling establishment, root-shoot ratio Caragana. Meanwhile, they strongly number preservation, thus enhanced sexual reproduction. Sand favored by promoting formation branch-derived ramets, while erosion benefited facilitating root-derived ramets. These results suggested Caragana, which could explain why abundance, area height areas was higher than grasslands. Our provided promoted population highlighted significant encroachment

Shrub encroachment can reverse desertification in semi-arid Mediterranean grasslands.

The worldwide phenomenon of shrub encroachment in grass-dominated dryland ecosystems is commonly associated with desertification. Studies of the purported desertification effects associated with shrub encroachment are often restricted to relatively few study areas, and document a narrow range of possible impacts upon biota and ecosystem processes. We conducted a study in degraded Mediterranean ...

Effects of shrub encroachment on soil organic carbon in global grasslands

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of shrub encroachment on soil organic carbon (SOC) content at broad scales and its controls. We conducted a meta-analysis using paired control data of shrub-encroached grassland (SEG) vs. non-SEG collected from 142 studies worldwide. SOC contents (0-50 cm) were altered by shrub encroachment, with changes ranging from -50% to + 300%, with an effect size of...

Modeling shrub encroachment in subalpine grasslands under different environmental and management scenarios.

Woody plants are spreading in many alpine and subalpine ecosystems and are expected to continue increasing in response to land abandonment and global warming. This encroachment threatens species diversity, and considerable efforts have been deployed to control it. In this study, we combined a lattice model and field data to investigate the efficiency of different management strategies in contro...

Shrub encroachment does not reduce the activity of some soil enzymes in Mediterranean semiarid grasslands

Shrub encroachment is a worldwide phenomenon with implications for desertification and global change. We evaluated its effects on the activities of urease, phosphatase and b-glucosidase in Mediterranean semiarid grasslands dominated by Stipa tenacissima by sampling 12 sites with and without resprouting shrubs along a climatic gradient. The presence of shrubs affected the evaluated enzymes at di...
